I Took My In-Laws Up Kenosha
The photo with this issue are from a day I took my in-laws up Kenosha Pass to watch the aspens turn. Kenosha is the easy one, close to town, a gentle pull off the highway. They have been coming up here for years, and they would sooner leave the long climb to somebody who drives it every week. So I drove, and we watched the color come down the mountainsides together. That day is the whole idea behind this one.
Kenosha is plenty on its own. If you want the big show, it sits farther out. Kebler Pass near Crested Butte holds one of the largest aspen groves on earth, and it turns whole mountainsides gold in the last week of September. The Maroon Bells above Aspen hit their peak in the same late-September stretch. Farther southwest, the San Juans and the Million Dollar Highway from Ouray to Silverton hold their color a little later, often into the first days of October, and are the kind of drive people plan a whole trip around.
Here is the honest part. The big ones are three to five hours out, most of it at altitude on mountain roads, and they are busiest exactly when they are best. So let your driver take the switchbacks, and keep your eyes off the road. You ride in a warm cabin behind tinted glass with a cold drink, and you watch the color instead of the traffic. Everyone goes together, and the person who has loved these groves for decades gets to simply ride.
Colorado turns 150 this year, which makes it a fine season to make a day of it, for your parents, a neighbor, or a client worth thanking. Map your own route, or let us build one around you.
One 2026 note: a warm summer and a thin snowpack have the aspens running early. The color will not wait for October. Whether you book with us or not, aim for the last two weeks of September, and go on a weekday if you can.

A few things past September, worth marking now:
Color drops into the valleys. The high passes turn first; the lower elevations hold their color into the first week of October. If late September gets away from you, early October still has a window.
Ski season is closer than it looks. The earliest resorts, A-Basin, Loveland, and Keystone, open in late October. The smartest winter move is booking your December mountain transfer now, while the calendar is open, not in December when it isn’t.
The guide runs to February. Past the color and the first snow, the new guide already has the holiday markets, the Nutcracker, and every resort opening weekend. Worth a look when you plan the back half of the year.
